The Sauer 505 is the latest rifle to come out of J. P. Sauer & Sohn’s doors. It has been designed to be the “most beautiful bolt action rifle in the world”, but next to its timeless beauty it will also appeal to generations of hunters for its utmost precision and uncompromising quality.
Sauer 505 Receiver
Sauer have developed a completely new action for the 505. The top-of-the-line steel receiver is incredibly robust and, when combined with the optic’s saddle mount, it is a guarantee for absolute precision. The saddle mounts allows you to easily remove the scope and replace it without any loss to zero. Using pure steel for the receiver has multiple advantages including stiffness and for general wear and tear, however the trade-off is a heavier weight. Sauer have spent a lot of time looking at the overall weight of 505 to ensure that it handles incredibly well no matter the shooting style. To this end the magazine well has been skeletonised to help reduce the weight of the steel receiver, and every other element has been assessed to remove unnecessary weight where possible.
The calibre of the rifle can be changed thanks to to the switch-barrel capability (barrels from the 404 can be used on the 505). The 505’s magazines are constructed out of polymer. Using this material allowed Sauer to design the geometry of the magazine’s lips and ensure that the cartridges feed perfectly – helping with the smoothness of the rifle’s action.
The Quattro Trigger
You can easily adjust the Quattro trigger’s pull weight at home without the need of a gunsmith. To do this you pull out the sing stud to reveal an Allen Key to its rear. This Allen Key is then used to quickly and easily unscrew the forend. Here the Allen Key can be used again to adjust the trigger pull to your desired weight to suit any hunting situation (preset weights are 350, 750, 1,000, and 1,200 grams). The Allen Key can also be used to change the height of the adjustable cheek piece on the Synchro XT and Synchro XTC models.
Manual Cocking
One of the most important features of the Sauer 505 is manual cocking. Whilst the Sauer 404 did feature this, the system found on the 505 is a new design. It is incredibly easy to cock the rifle by sliding the cocking mechanism (found at the rear of the bolt) up, or decock it by sliding it back down. You can cock the rifle whilst it is in your shoulder or just before you mount it. When in the decocked position the cocking mechanism blocks the bolt from being operated, however the Sauer 505 has a ‘Tip Toe Open’ function allowing you to slightly slide the cocking mechanism up to operate the bolt to load or unload the rifle.
The Sauer 505’s Bolt
The bolt is manufactured from one piece of solid steel with six locking lugs. Unlike the 404 model, the Sauer 505 does not have a removable bolt head, instead you can get different bolts to suit different calibres (the barrels and stocks of the Sauer 404 are interchangeable with the 505). The reason for this is to ensure low tolerances which result in maximum precision. Reloading the 505 is a seamless experience – the bolt is characterised by its silky smoothness, quiet operation, and exceptional speed.
Sauer 505 Options
Not only can you configure your Sauer 505 to your individual tastes and needs, but three different configuration packages that have been spec’ed by experienced hunters are also. The focus is always on the bolt assembly, barrel and receiver, each package has slightly different variations – you can pick whether you want your rifle to have a polymer, carbon fibre, or wooden stock, with or without an adjustable comb.
The Elegance Package – Beauty in Perfection
The Elegance Package has luxurious features that shine no matter whether they are combined with a wooden, carbon fibre or polymer stock. The barrel and receiver have a DLC (diamond like carbon) coating, and the bolt has been jewelled. The bolt knob is knurled and topped with the Sauer logo.
The Highland Package – Stylish in Any Situation
The receiver, fluted barrel and the bolt assembly have all been finished with a DLC coating, and the bolt knob is knurled. This package makes for an ideal lightweight hunting rifle with a carbon fibre stock, or one that can withstand any conditions with a polymer stock.
The Outback Package – Tough
The Outback Package makes for a good sturdy all-round rifle for every day use – the barrel and receiver have a DLC coating, and the bolt knob is made from anodised aluminium. The carbon fibre stock with a thumbhole makes this rifle ideal for driven hunts.
