Rigby Dagga Boy is London gunmaker John Rigby & Co.’s latest limited-edition book. It features stories of African buffalo hunts in the words of the hunters themselves as part of project to promote ethical and sustainable hunting in Africa.
Rigby Dagga Boy is the ultimate coffee table book for anyone who has experienced the magic of a buffalo hunt or for those whom bagging a scrum cap buffalo is a lifelong dream. Limited to just 1,000 copies and available to buy from the Rigby website, the book features over 70 stories interspersed with behind-the-scenes photography and details of the outfitters and Professional Hunters involved. The book is a compilation of the incredible buffalo hunt accounts sent in by hunters from around the world as their entries to the inaugural Rigby Dagga Boy Project in late 2021.
The biennial Dagga Boy Project is designed to gather scientific data whilst highlighting the importance of valuing a buffalo’s age more than its ‘inches’. The aim is to promote ethical hunting and ensure a healthier, stronger population of all six species of African buffalo by focusing on old and broken-horned bulls who have surpassed breeding age.
To enter the Dagga Boy Project, hunters were asked to send the Rigby team a detailed description of their buffalo hunt, along with photographs of qualifying bulls they have taken in the past 10 years. In the case of the inaugural 2021 project, the hunt must have taken place up to the end of the 2021 season and the entries closed in December of that year.
Rigby’s managing director, Marc Newton, commented: “We received hundreds of entries to the Dagga Boy project which totally blew us away, and the stories they contained were so evocative and extraordinary in their detail that we knew they needed to be shared with fellow hunting enthusiasts. The result is a stunning coffee table style book that gives the reader an insight into the thrilling, dangerous and rewarding pursuit that is hunting the wily old Dagga Boy buffalo. Some of the stories sent a shiver down my spine, and they all made me desperate to book my next hunt.”
