New Beginnings at Ashcombe

Ashcombe Adventure Centre has reopened under the new management of Sportsman Gun Centre in association with Double Barrel Clay Shooting.

Located just a stone’s throw from the end of the M5 at Exeter is Ashcombe, a ground that has long had the potential to be one of the finest establishments in the South West, if not the whole of the UK. The new owners fully intend to realise this potential. Work has already begun in earnest turning it from a small practice ground into a destination shooting facility across 50 acres that will draw keen novice and experienced clayshots to its abundant facilities.

With the team at Sportsman Gun Centre and Don Brunt from Double Barrelled Clay shooting working in partnership there’s little doubt that all the ingredients for success are in place.  Just a week after getting the keys to the venue there was a new sporting course in place while fresh life had been breathed into the facility through an almost overnight transformation.

As well as Sporting practice the ground will be offering 100 Bird Registered Sporting competitions on the first Sunday of each month as well as FITASC and Supersporting.  In addition, the new owners are already looking for a suitable area in which to offer DTL/ABT to meet the needs of local trap shooters.

The monthly sporting competition will be held on a different layout to the usual practice course meaning that for most of the month there will be more than 20 stands available at any time for ‘pay and play’, as well as English skeet and the rather unusual but fun offering of rabbit skeet.  A new Game area should be in place for September offering a great assortment of suitable targets for those wanting to brush up on their skills ahead of the season.

One-to-one instruction is available either from Ashcombe’s own experienced instructor or from Don who has developed quite a following in the South West and who will be running the ground on a day to day basis.

“Ashcombe has so much untapped potential, with some truly unique topography and so much space to utilise the sky really is the limit.  However whilst we are looking to develop it into a destination for competition shooters we want to ensure that the loyal club shooters that have been coming here for 30 years are still able to enjoy their club.  That’s why we are restarting fun events like late night shooting on Thursday evenings with the emphasis very much on putting smiles on peoples faces! As for the future we are already looking at ideas for some major championships of our own and we will be looking to hold bigger CPSA events as the ground moves forward”
