A day’s shooting isn’t over until you have cleaned your gun too; the sometimes arduous process of cleaning your gun may be made quicker and easier by using Britbore Mops. Now that a second COVID-19 lockdown is in force in England, now is the perfect time to give your gun a thorough clean.
Britbore Mop is a family company run by Bill Holloway who has been a game shooter for over 40 years. Bill always found cleaning his gun to be a chore. He tried a whole host of different pieces of cleaning equipment in the hope of finding a product that would make cleaning quicker and easier. When Bill could not find this product he set about designing and manufacturing his own.
Bill believes that using a phosphor bronze brush and a good solvent is still the best way to loosen the powder and shot residue from the bores of a shotgun. It was removing the residue and solvent that he found laborious and open to innovation.
WHAT ARE BRITBORE MOPS?
The Britbore Mop is a made from wool felt and has been manufactured to British Standard BS4060:2006. Wool felt has been picked due to it providing the best in terms of absorption and was of use. The diameter is oversized and cut with a controlled tolerance of +/- 0.5mm to ensure that the bore of your shotgun gets the best clean possible.
Britbore has partnered with Whitby & Chandler who are leaders in their field. They have been manufacturing cut parts since 1923 and have significant experience in the felt industry.
Britbore Mops are available for the following bores: 12, 16, 20, 28.
HOW TO USE BRITBORE MOPS
The Britbore website gives the following instructions:
- Spray some solvent/cleaner inside your bores. Then use a cleaning rod with a phosphor bronze brush attached and rod through several times to loosen the powder and shot residue.
- Remove the brush from the rod.
- Push a mop into each chamber, giving them a twist as you push them in, as they are designed to fit tight.
- Expect some resistance and squeaking as you push them through the bores with the rod.
- These mops will be heavily soiled — please dispose of them responsibly.
- To remove any light residue — push another mop into each chamber and rod through.
- Finally, spray gun oil inside the bores and using the same mops — rod them through. This will coat your bores with a thin film of clean oil to protect them in storage.
Keep these mops to be used first the next time you clean your gun as they will only be lighted soiled.
If your gun is a multi-choke please ensure that the choke tubes are tightly fitted before cleaning your gun.
