Lot 149 – An Impressive Pair of Cannons

If the previous lot featured was bought to welcome guests to your house, this lot will surely send the opposite signal.

This pair of cast iron cannons (nos. 87 and 145) were made in the late 18th Century by Walker and Co. of Rotherham. Based near Sheffield, South Yorkshire, Walker and Co. produced cannons between 1771 and 1820. During the Battle of Trafalgar 79 of the 105 cannons aboard Nelson’s Victory were made by the company.

These cannons have 172.8cm barrels and have been decommissioned in accordance with the rules of Ordnance. The estimate is £15,000 – 18,000.

Lot 360 – A Fine Cased Pair of 40-Bore Flintlock Duelling Pistols

This pair of duelling pistols were made by the ‘king of gunmaking’, Joseph Manton. It was under Joseph Manton that James Purdey first honed his skills.

Made in 1807 these pistols are a sight to behold. Bonhams say “Many collectors of antique firearms would consider their collection incomplete if it did not include a cased set of duelling pistols, preferably by this maker.” The estimate for this lot is £15,000 – 18,000.
