Savage Arms was founded in 1894 in Utica, New York by Arthur Savage. The company initially focused on developing a unique lever-action rifle design called the Savage Model 1985 that featured a rotary magazine, and offered increased ammunition capacity. During World War II Savage turned to the production of military rifles and made of most of the Thompson submachine guns used during this conflict.
